Use of sigma-delta modulation to control EMI from switch-mode power supplies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a major cause of concern in switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) which commonly use standard pulsewidth modulation (PWM). In this paper, Sigma–Delta ( ) modulation is proposed as an alternative switching technique to reduce conducted EMI from an SMPS. The result of using modulation is a spread in the spectrum of the conducted emissions so that large concentrations of power at discrete frequencies are avoided. Experimental time-domain waveforms and spectra of the switching function of first-order and second-order modulators are presented to prove the viability of the scheme for EMI mitigation. These modulators are then applied to a dc–dc converter in an off-the-shelf computer power supply and experimental results show a reduction of roughly 5–10 dB V in EMI emissions over standard PWM modulators.

متن کاملReduction of Harmonics Caused Due to Smps Using Sigma Delta Modulation
The harmonic currents generated by the modern power supply equipment cause power system heating and also add to user power bills. Personal computers are the major equipments which use the modern power supply ie switched mode power supply (SMPS).These SMPS draw non-sinusoidal currents from the supply which results in generation of harmonics. Power quality of the distribution network is been dist...
متن کاملPerformance Scrutiny of Two Control Schemes Based on DSM and HB in Active Power Filter
This paper presents a comparative analysis between two current control strategies, constant source power and generalized Fryze current, used in Active Power Filter (APF) applications having three different modulation methods. The Hysteresis Band (HB) and first-order Delta-Sigma Modulation (DSM) as well as the second-order DSM is applied. The power section of the active power filter is viewed as...

Switch mode power supply (SMPS) is good selection for power supplies of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which is one of the most important interference sources of UAV. The power switches with their high dv/dt and di/dt switching slopes are the sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI). In this paper, a variable frequency modulation technology of the forward converter of UAV is presented, whi...
متن کاملConduction and Dead-Time Voltage Drops Estimation of Asymmetric Cascaded H-Bridge Converters Utilizing Level-Shifted PWM Scheme
Linear AC power supplies can be replaced by their nonlinear switching counterparts due to the lower voltage drops and higher efficiency and power density of switching-mode inverters. Multilevel cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converters are the preferred inverter structure because of modular configuration, control, and protection. The output voltage quality in CHB converters depends on the number of ou...
